Most of the grave and vital challenges and problems we are facing today, individually, collectively and globally on a scale and of an intensity never known before, have their roots in the frighteningly increasing imbalance between advancement of science and technology and our concern for the true welfare of humankind. Think of the rapidly mounting arsenals of nuclear weapons and armament race, of the vital environmental hazards (global warming & climate change), of the population explosion, unemployment, inflation, ill health and undernutrition and many other related problems.
All these problems arise from the alarming gap between too much preoccupation with development of science and technology and too little concern, generally speaking, about its application to the major problems mentioned above. In this situation, which is of great concern for man's future, every single step in the direction of strengthening the interaction and complementarity of science and human values, which arise from the principle of Ahimsa, counts.
Dr. D. S. Kothari inspired and directed Shantipeeth to put the concept of such complementarity in practice. In this regard many other eminent scientists have further guided our endavour to bring about a humane order in society. They have strengthened and promoted the concept of synergy between science and human values. They have explained how to link the advancement of science and technology to human welfare at large. People in general and the youth in particular have been greatly inspired for the last two decades.
