Conservation of Hills and Valleys

Protection and Conservation of Hills and Valleys
around Udaipur

Hills and valleys surround Udaipur. In order to protect Udaipur and its heritage, there is a great need to conserve its hills and valleys. Chirva Ghata (the famous valley once covered with the Pine) is one of the important valleys around Udaipur. It is located 12 km north east of Udaipur on the National Highway no. 8. It used to be a thick forest, more than 10 km in depth. The valley begins from an ancient pilgrimage called Amrakhji, which is part of Chirva Ghata.

This pristine valley came under serious threat in 1987-88 when the government started allotting land to marble cutting industries around it. Land mafia also clandestinely started making inroads, and the valley along with its forest cover, flora and fauna came to be on the verge of devastation. Shantipeeth organised a public movement with the support of people from neighbouring villages to save the valley. When the matter was raised in the court of law, interestingly, more than a hundred advocates of Udaipur Bar came forward to co-operate. The struggle lasted for a decade. The sustained pressure built through mass movement ultimately forced the government to cancel the dubious land allocations of 1988.

Amrakhji Sanrakshan Mandal was formed by Shantipeeth to thwart any such harmful attempts in the future. The Mandal is now working as an environment and peace education centre. The archaeologically significant ancient temple of Amrakhji has also been saved from depletion and renovated through mobilising public participation.
